About us

Our story

How it all started

We are Lizette and Ounooi and we’re the owners at Van Brakel Stoor. We are a farm stall, restaurant and events venue comfortably nestled between the rolling hills in the heart of the Overberg. Our store offers a truly unique and authentic experience. It will take you back to when food was prepared with time.

Established in the 1920s, Van Brakel Stoor has been serving generations of locals and travellers alike seeking honest homemade food and warm platteland hospitality.

Van Brakel Stoor is an authentic, historical farm stall, on a lone stand, along the Caledon / Napier route. With its original antique wooden shelving and floors, vintage tins and collectables lining the length of the ‘Boere kitsch’ interior, the space immediately transports one to the early 1900’s.

We are stocked with products reminiscent of yesteryear, such as sousboontjies, slaphakskeentjies, tamatiesmoor, homemade ginger beer, rusks, preserves and our owners’ legendary twice-proved white and brown breads. This is an experience of the ‘olde worlde’ Cape that we can truly recommend.

We offer delicious farm stall fare, including piping hot coffee and a selection of delicious breakfast and lunch dishes. Travelers also enjoy our full English breakfasts (with the Van Brakel difference) and our delicious French toast with bacon. Remember to bring a basket with you when you visit because all our lovely tuisegbakte goed is too good to leave behind.

Our padstal also boasts a huge entertainment and functions area, beautifully decorated with antiques, so be sure to pop in to grab an eyeful of the stunning pieces and collectables.

Our padstal

We collect and endorse homemade products from the surrounding areas, with honest, hearty tastes and flavours. The Overberg is known for its lush wheat fields and warm-hearted people. This is a philosophy we live in: we place specific importance on a personal conversation with our visitors.

Van Brakel Stoor has a rich and interesting history dating back to the early 1920s when the store was operated as a local grocery store and mechanical repair shop for the farmers in the area.

We officially opened our doors as we are known today in November 2004.

Join us and enjoy a cup of coffee or stay for a traditional lunch and meet the delightful locals!

Wander around

Beautifully situated between the green hills and yellow canola fields of the Overberg. Food really tasty. The apple crumble light as a feather. Lots of real antique displays. Very interesting to wander around.
