Where friendship & tradition come for coffee
Savoury nostalgia – Van Brakel Stoor’s restaurant & homestyle delights
Relish heartwarming cuisine in rustic surroundings
We are a popular stopover for holidaymakers on their way to Arniston, Struisbaai or Agulhas. We’re also a wonderful breakfast or lunch stop if you’re just take a drive through the Overberg.
Our building is on Lizette and Jan van Brakel’s farm, Springerskuil. It has been a beacon here in the Overberg for three generations.
“Yes, when I was still a child, this place was Jan’s general dealer. We waited here in the morning for the school bus to Jongensklip,” remembers Ounooi van Straaten. “You could buy anything here – from flour, sugar, socks and shirts to thread and droppers. At the back was another workshop where the farmers had their bakkies serviced. And old Jan had a slaughterhouse too. There was even a small table where the men sat and played cards!”
Many of these old features have been preserved: the glass display case, the old cash register, a shop book in which the purchases of the district’s families were recorded in neat handwriting. Take a look around: the shelves are still stacked with the original boxes in which everything from a tie to a safari suit was sold, and on the old counter there is another brass tape measure screwed on for measuring material.
Our Restaurant
Nowadays, you can buy home-baked and pickled products here and our store also has a tasting room with some of the area’s best country wines such as Raka, Slowine, Lomond and South Hill.
But our pride is the home-cooked meals: farm style breakfasts, bobotie, tripe, pastries, burgers, toasted sandwiches, quiches etc.
Some of our customers believe you can catch them in a swing with a plate of our waterblommetjie bredie! The little flowers become spirit in the Kleinrivier which runs over Ounooi’s farm, Hillside. It is served with rice, pampoenkoekies and beetroot salad.
For dessert you can choose between cheesecake, apple pie, a milkshake or even two koeksisters.
And remember a few packs of biscuits and a jar of jam!

Friendly trusting service
A hidden gem of the beaten track. 100 year old building in the style of an old classic farm stall and shop. Friendly trusting service and great classic menu selection. Card machine was offline and the lady trusted me to EFT payment later. Trust and friendlyniss not often seen anymore. Support them. It’s worth it.
